Stadium-sized data centers that consume significant amounts of electricity are emerging throughout central Ohio. These facilities receive hundreds of millions in state and local tax breaks annually, despite concerns from grid operators that they may soon strain the available power supply.
The data centers are owned by both well-known consumer brands like Amazon, Google, and Meta and lesser-known companies such as Quality Technology Services and CyrusOne. Although resembling large factories from the outside, these centers usually employ only 20 to 30 workers once operational. Some even receive tax incentives for committing to create as few as 10 new jobs.
