Meta Platforms Inc. has announced plans to build an $800 million data center in Cheyenne, Wyoming. The facility is expected to generate nearly 1,100 jobs during its construction phase and will be operational by 2027. Spanning 715,000 square feet, the data center will be situated on a 960-acre tract in the High Plains Business Park. This will be Meta’s 25th data center, supporting technologies like Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads.
Brad Davis, Meta’s director of data center community and economic development, expressed excitement about the project, noting Wyoming’s strong infrastructure, energy access, and talent pool as key factors in the decision. He highlighted the commitment to long-term community investment.
Cheyenne has been a data center hub for over 12 years, with Microsoft establishing its first center in 2012 and planning additional facilities. Wyoming also offers incentives for data centers, unlike neighboring Colorado, making it an attractive location for such investments.
The project is expected to bring high-tech jobs that could attract applicants from Northern Colorado. According to Rich Werner, CEO of Upstate Colorado Economic Development, these construction jobs meet a high demand in the region.
Upon completion, the data center will have around 100 permanent jobs. Cheyenne LEADS, the local economic development organization, has supported Meta since 2019. Betsey Hale, CEO of Cheyenne LEADS, welcomed the development, noting that Meta will provide quality jobs and benefits to the community.
Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon praised the announcement, highlighting it as a testament to Wyoming’s business-friendly climate and commitment to innovation.
