The EU’s Power Mix Becomes Greenest Yet in 2023
The European Union has made significant strides in renewable energy, constructing 56GW of new solar power capacity and 16GW of new wind capacity in 2023. According to data from an industry body, nearly 75% of the EU’s electrical production was derived from sources free of CO2 emissions during the first half of 2024.
Renewable sources like wind and solar contributed to 50% of this production, while nuclear energy accounted for 24%. This marks a substantial increase from the 68% share seen in 2023. The trade body highlighted an unprecedented influx of renewables on the grid and stabilization of the nuclear fleet as key drivers behind these achievements.
Eurelectric’s secretary-general, Kristian Ruby, described the pace of change as impressive. The substantial increase in renewable energy deployment underscores the EU’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and moving toward a more sustainable energy future.
